Help! My dogs paws are so bad after the detox she is limping!

by Susan Starratt

My 8 year old lab was getting increasingly itchy and we tried apoquel for a year and it stopped working.

Then prednisone, and then antibiotics, and as the inter digital cysts were getting worse and worse they suggested steroid needles in between her toes. So I said no. We’re done. This isn’t working.

We did a ton of research and took her off the apoquel for several weeks. Then weaned her onto a pure raw diet.

Then two more weeks later we started a yeast detox through the adored beast apothecary. Then she broke out in hotspots all over her head and face.

The protocol is almost complete and she is slowly starting to heal on her face but now her paws are bleeding and swollen and she is limping.

We do betadine and Epsom salt soaks daily and coconut oil and socks to prevent licking.

My question is does this poor doggo need antibiotics or am I doing the right thing here? I feel like I just opened Pandora’s box.

Am I doing irrepairable damage to my dog? I just want to help her and I feel like I’m hurting her and nothing is working. I wish I had some guidance and a holistic vet near me.

I can relate

I hope your pup is doing better. Your article brought me to tears. As I was reading it I couldn't believe there was someone else living the same experience.😭 My lab is 7 and has been on immune suppressant drugs for 5 years.(It breaks my heart now, knowing what I know about these drugs) She's been off all meds since November 2022 and on raw for almost a year. You’re right about opening Pandora's Box...shit has hit the fan and my poor little girl is dealing with yeast over growth and hotspots galore. Twice we’ve tried the Yeasty Beast protocol, as well as the leaky gut protocol. Some days are better than others and your article gives me strength to keep going. I do believe (based on my research) the damage done to my dog can be healed. I too wish we had a holistic or homeopathic vet near by. Until then I will keep doing my very best to support and heal my beautiful girl. Thank you

Detoxing Dog
by: Sandra

Hi Susan,

Well, you're right about one thing! You have opened Pandora's Box.

As horrible as it is, all that's happening is that you are undoing all the suppressive damage done by apoquel, prednisone and antibiotics.

When you stop using drugs that suppress the immune response, all hell will break loose. So that's where you are!

The good news is that it will resolve. When? Who knows. Your dog's body will work in it's own time.

Yes, she's probably uncomfortable, but unfortunately, this is what happens. If you give her more antibiotics, you will simply create more imbalance.

So apologize to your dog for giving her stuff that didn't help, give her a kiss and hug, and tell her that relief will come.

Congrats on switching to raw.

Sandra
