Dogs Have Been Feeding Themselves for 4,999,845 Years

That's a very strange number, isn't it? Well let's take a look at the evolutionary history of feeding dogs, and perhaps it will make more sense to you.

Wolves appeared on the evolutionary timeline about 5,000,000 years ago. Since wolves are the original ancestors of dogs, this marks the the beginning of the canidae species. Scientists agree on this fact.

Approximately 14,000 years ago, probably from east Asia, dogs as we know them today, started to appear on the evolutionary timeline. The strong survived. The ones best able to utilize their ancestral diet. The diet of wolves. Scientists agree on this fact.

Fast forward now, to 1860 somewhere near the end of the Industrial Revolution. Some thinking person decided that since we were already now, speeding up the manufacturing of products and agricultural output, that it might be a good idea to start manufacturing dog food. Why the heck not?

It wasn't a terrific idea however, and didn't really take off until much later, quite recently in fact, when Purina invented the extrusion process in 1957. Really? That wasn't so long ago.

So lets, back up and take a look at the time line.

5,000,000 years ago, there was the wolf

14,000 years ago there was the dog

155 years ago in 1860 commercial dog food was being introduced for purchase.

58 years ago in 1957 Purina invents the extrusion process.

So I wanted you to see this chart. I wanted to let your mind grasp the significance of this picture. The current popular way of feeding dogs commercially prepared kibble and canned dog food, dog treats, ice cream, pizza, peanut butter and whatever else...is not working!

In the space of less than 200 years we have taken a successful species...the dog, and created an animal with lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, thyroid malfunction, bowel disease and yes...even cancer. Thanks to the complete and balanced, all natural food that comes in a bag or can. We should be ashamed of ourselves!

For 4,999,845 years, dogs have fed themselves and thrived.

Let's do the math.

5,000,000 - 155 = 4,999,485

It has taken 155 years to wreck what Mother Nature worked so hard to create and perfect... The dog. Our beloved dogs. Those creatures we live with and have lived with for 14,000 years and claim to love.

Is this how we love them? By feeding them garbage, food devoid of life and life giving nutrition? We've taken a strong, noble, fit and successful species and made them weak, sick and dependant on us. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

Dogs have been eating their ancestral, raw, whole prey model diet since time began, and have THRIVED. What would make us think we know better. Apparently we don't know as much as we think we do.

Just as a comparison, and something for you to think about, human beings are THE most successful species on the face of the earth today. We ALSO have been eating our ancestral diet since time began.

In the same 200 years since the Industrial Revolution we ourselves have been eating more and more processed and packaged food, to our detriment. Who do you know that is diabetic, suffering from bowel disorders, thyroid malfunctions and God Forbid...cancer?

Look around you. Do you think perhaps food might have an impact on quality of health? Look at the pie chart. It's trying to tell us something.

I feel very passionate about the subject of food and how food impacts quality of health. I have seen first hand what a raw food diet for dogs can do to heal and revitalize a sick dog.

If your dog is healthy let's keep him that way. I encourage you to start feeding some fresh foods today, before illness takes hold and it's too late. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but really...what are you waiting for?
